Mostly people create websites and submit them to a few search engines with the hope that they will get good business. But after sometime they come to know that only some people visited their sites and they have not get any business. Then they decide to optimize their websites with respect to their main keyword with the hope that they will get good position in search engines. But in search engine optimization professional approach is required because one has to work on many grounds. There are some steps for finding a right keyword to optimize our website.

The first step in SEO is to find the right keyword for our website. Keyword is very useful in increasing relevant traffic to your website. There are many ways with which we can choose the right keyword. It is very important step and we cannot escape it.

  1. Suppose we have created health related website. Our website sells health related eBooks, medicine and food supplements. Go to Google and Yahoo search engines and make search for “Health”. On Google you will find 2,160,000,000 competitive sites for this keyword. If you choose this keyword then you have to compete with a large number (2,160,000,000) of websites. Many websites would have excellent ranking in search engine. Now think you are just starting but making competition with a lot of good health related websites, definitely they will give you tough time and it will be very difficult to get top position on Google.
  1. It would be good for you to take less competitive word get some rank and then you can take more competitive word. So you should not start with the keyword of Health.
  2. Now the question is “What will be the suitable keyword for us?” Copy URLs of some top sites from both the search engines and analyze their keywords and page rank to find keyword ideas.
  3. We can choose some related keywords for our website but do not choose the top keyword because you will face great competition with top keyword. It is a big mistake to select top keyword so don’t start optimizing your website with such keyword. We can also download free tools from Good Keywords to get keyword idea for our website.
  4. For more keyword ideas go to Google KeywordTool and get keyword idea for website content. Paste URLs of websites you selected from Google and Yahoo search results one by one to get keyword idea. After clicking on get keyword idea a long list of keywords is generated. Analyze and narrow down the list of keywords on which you want to focus.
  5. Open word tracker and search each keyword phrase. Analyze the related keywords that word tracker suggests then shorten that list up to some keywords.
  6. For further purification of keywords repeat the same process at Keyword Discovery. The word “Health” is searched for 280062 times and the website which hold top position also have good rank. So it would be difficult to compete using this keyword with websites having good ranking on search engine.
  1. Now we find keyword phrases like “care health”, “health educator” etc. If we use “care health” as keyword then the top site having this keyword has page rank 5, with which we can compete. Now we have selected and shortened the list of keywords with the help of Google, Wordtracker and keyword discovery.
  1. Now open Google search engine and type your selected keyword phrases within quotes. With this Google will show the list of only those websites having exact phrase. Check how many pages contain that phrase. Lower the number of pages having the exact phrase better it is to compete with lesser competitors.
  2. We can use this keyword for our homepage (i.e. www.domain.com) to get immediate advantages. Now with the help of these keywords write quality content which will make your website great for your visitors. Your keywords should be used properly and in an informative and innovative way.

There are some rules which we should follow to make our website search engine friendly

  • Use group of words as keyword.
  • Your keyword and description of website should be relevant to your website theme.
  • Try to understand your visitors’ requirements and demands.
  • Choose a narrow list of keywords which should be less competitive.
  • Localize your keywords but not to much limited or localized.
  • Choose a primary keyword for which to optimize your web page and some secondary keywords that can increase your potential visitors.
  • Use 3 or 4 different keyword on each of your web page.
  • Place your keywords in title tag, header tag, ALT tag, anchor tag, Meta tags and comments etc.
  • Don’t misspell your keywords.
  • Check keyword density for your keyword, the higher the density the better it is.

Page Rank: Google’s way to give specific value how popular your website is.

Force Search Engines to Read Keywords

Posted by on Mar 29, 2009 in SEO, Web Design & Development | 0 comments

Beside choosing keywords, it will need to be read by spiders as well.Search engine index means when you search your website on search engine it shows results having your site in the list of search engine results. Search engines like Google, Yahoo, MSN use software called crawler to find web pages for their search results. Some pages like, shopping carts and search results from internal searches prevent crawlers to be crawled. For good ranking on search engine, first of all you should be indexed in search engine.

Now I shall tell you how to index your website in Google with in 24 hours? Go to Google search engine and enter the keyword of your site, let say it is “internet marketing” and search it, you will see a list of Google search results. Visit each website and notice its page rank. Find a website of page rank 5 or higher and search its link page (I shall tell you what a link is later). Contact the website for getting link to your website from one of high page rank webpage and in return you will place their link on your website. If you will be able to place your link on their website to yours then you will be indexed by the search engine quickly.

If you would be able to get 1 link from a website of PR5 to your website then you will be indexed by Google within 3 days. Similarly if you get link on PR6 then you will be indexed by Google within 24 hours. If you have your own website of high PR then place link of your new website and be indexed in search engine. Once Google search engine indexed your website then you can remove your link from you high PR website.

This was the simple method for indexing on a search engine, if you have a good website in all respect. Sometimes a website is submitted in a search engine but it is not indexed by the search engine or it takes a long time to index it. There are many reasons which prevent a webpage from being indexed in a search engine. Some of them are:

  • There should be enough time for search engines to index your web pages and your website should not be already indexed. Different search engines take different time for indexing which is normally from one to eight weeks. Search engines like Altavista, Yahoo and Inktomi offer paid inclusion service to index a website quickly in its database. It is not enough to submit your website in a search engine to be at the top of search results.
  • Before submitting your website to search engine you should upload your web pages completely. Some search engines don’t index pages that are not linked from home page. Your home page should link to other web pages directly or indirectly. If a web page is not linked from the home page then search engine can take it as an unimportant page.
  • Most of the search engines don’t index text embedded in images or multimedia files and the information that is generated by Java applets, Flash files or in XML coding.
  • Your pages should not take much time in loading and should not be complex. The time out is possible before spider can index the text. Keep your pages small and fast in loading for you visitors and search engine benefits. Most webmasters recommend your web page size 50kb or less.
  • If you are using frames for your website content then it can create problems with submissions. It is possible that search engine index a part of your website but not the other frame. So try to develop non-framed menus or website design because they are search engine friendly.
  • It is impossible for search engines to index website that require password or registration. Search engine spiders cannot provide passwords or complete registration process by filling registration forms. Search engine spiders are unable to read dynamic pages so they ignore those pages. If there is any special symbol in the URL then search engines can ignore it. So your pages should be simple and static for easy indexing. It does not mean that if you use some script in your website then your page will not be indexed or lower your rankings. But this script should not be too much fancy then search engine ignore the JavaScript code and read the remaining page.
  • Some search engines give importance to external links. These search engines index your home page only; other pages are not indexed until you get one or more links from other domains. For indexing your web pages there should be external links within a specific period of time. It becomes easy to get indexed, stay indexed to achieve top ranking. So submit your site in major directories first to get listing in search engines.
  • Many search engines don’t index websites that are hosted on free servers like geocities or the index limited number of pages of those free websites. So you should be professional and buy your own domain from a respected web host. Because the traffic, which is generated from search engines, is more valuable from the cost that you save by getting a free hosting service provides. Free web hosts are often unreliable and they force to display banners, which send visitors away.
  • If your web host is unreliable then it can create problem in indexing your web pages. Suppose when the search engine spider visits your site but your website is not responding then you will not be indexed. But if you are indexed and spider revisits your site but your site id down due to unreliability of your host then your website might be removed from their database. So keep a close eye on your web host service and uptime.
  • Your website’s IP should be unique because if you share IP with another website on the same server, then your IP can be banned in result of what another website did.

How to Choose Keywords for Website

Posted by on Mar 29, 2009 in SEO, Web Design & Development | 0 comments

Part of the SEO work is to put golden keywords in your website.

How to Choose Keywords for Your Website

Having a well-built and up to date web page and promoting it so that many thousand of people can see the products and services you are selling is the key behind earning a lot of money from doing business online. However, you must not stop at building the site and updating it. People must be able to see it if you want to increase the number of potential customers and you can only do so by optimizing your web page for search engines. Most people use popular search engines when looking for certain products and services and that is why having a site optimized for these search engines is very important. Having the correct keywords and keyword density is one of the most important things when considering creating a web site to support your business. Actually, you should have in mind the list of keywords you want to add to your site before you even start creating it. Search engines offer a series of search engine optimization services and this should be a good starting point. If you are planning an English web site, you can look at websites such as wordtracker.com or inventory.overture.com. Therefore, the first logical step is to make out a list of keywords that should appear on your webpage. Next, try to find out what keywords your competitors are using, as you can find some more relevant information this way.

You can use two methods: optimizing your website for a small number of very popular keywords, or very many less popular keywords. You will see that in practice these methods are very well combined many times. There is a downside to using keywords as a main visitor’s attraction method: all sites uses it and it is harder for a newly developed webpage to get even close to the rankings of large, old sites that use similar keywords. One of the best ways to increase traffic to your site is to attract targeted visitors when thinking your search engine optimization methods. Remember, targeted visitors are those people that come to your site and who are searching for the products you are selling and are willing to buy those products or services. It is the number of targeted visitors that come to your site that should interest you and not the total amount of traffic. From the list of keywords, that you have gathered you must choose the core keywords for which you will optimize your web page. You will not be the only one using those keywords on your site, thus the competition for the selected keywords is very high. In order to see you site fits in once launched, you must have an idea about exactly how competitive your web page is. You can do this by reviewing a set of data for the first ten results displayed by the search engine when using the selected keywords. Among the data you should look at is the average Page Rank of each of the displayed results, the average number of links that guides people to these web pages. Other elements you should look at are the approximate number of pages on the Internet that contain the selected keywords (the total number of results displayed by the search engine) and the number of pages on the Internet that contain exact matches to the keyword phrase. By having all these numbers in mind, you can make an idea about your competition on those keywords and how easy or how hard it will be for you to get a top ranking for your web page.

Now that you have gathered enough information to make a thorough examination of the competition rate for all of your keyword phrases, you can go on to include a series of key phrases with moderate popularity but having an acceptable competition rate, which you can use to further promote and optimize your site.

Because the services provided by search engines about keywords and keywords statistics, do not be surprised if at first you will not be able to obtain the most efficient list of keywords from the beginning. After you have launched your web page, you can further analyze traffic and keywords statistics to finely tune your site. Only after launching your site you will be able to see the search engine’s rating of your site for particular phrases and you will also have the number of visits to your site for these phrases. Now you can see what key phrases are attracting people that use search engines to your site and what keywords do not work as efficient. If you notice that certain key phrases are not efficient in attracting traffic to your page, you can take measure in that direction: you can edit them, or you can take then out altogether. You may also discover that a keyword that you did not take into consideration very much at the beginning is bringing you more targeted visitors than one that you considered important and you can optimize your web site accordingly. If you know that keywords are efficient in bringing you targeted traffic, you can increase their frequency throughout your web page or even create new pages around those keywords and phrases. The techniques of search engine optimization are changing all the time and what had proven highly efficient some time ago may not be appropriate in the future. Therefore, that is why you will need to changes the keywords in time if you see that the traffic numbers are not satisfactory anymore. Nothing is built forever and you will constantly need to update both your web page and your SEO methods to been in touch with the current developments.

Also, remember that your main page attracts up to 50% of all the search traffic, and because it has the highest visibility in search engines, optimizing it for search engines and for the most popular queries related to your business field should be a top priority.

There are also a lot of tools out there that can help you to research your keywords. Typing “SEO Tools” in any search engine will return huge amount of useful SEO tools. There are also tools for link building, page research, marketing effectiveness, etc.

Basics of SEO

Posted by on Mar 29, 2009 in SEO, Web Design & Development | 0 comments

Search Engine Optimization (SEO) is one of the most important parts of any web business, and as such is vital to the success of your website.Having a comprehensive knowledge of SEO is an extremely good weapon to have in your arsenal, and this article will take you through some of the most important SEO practices.

SEO is relatively easy to define; it basically means the attempt to put your website at the top of search engine results for any number of different keywords. There are numerous different ways to do this and with so many websites currently indexed on the major search engines (Google recently indexed its trillionth web site) you need to know as many as possible in order to succeed.

Search engine algorithms (the processes by which they organize web sites) have been studied for many years and because of their mathematical nature, are reasonably predictable. In this way, we know what search engines are looking for, and often they are some of the simplest things.

Search Engine Marketing

SEO is more about marketing than any other aspect of creating your website; you need to know who your target audience is and what sort of search terms they will be using to find websites like yours. The words typed into a search engine are called Keywords, and these are what your website should be targeting to increase the number of people who find you. Keyword research (the process of defining which keywords you are going to target) is vitally important, and you should spend a fair amount of time working through it. There are some great tools out there to help you with keyword research, the best of which is Overture, which will tell you how many people have searched for a term on Yahoo in the last month. Generally speaking, if you times Overture’s numbers by 10, you will know (approximately) the amount of searches performed on Google, so it is a very useful tool for finding out what keywords you should be targeting. Recently long tail keywords have become an important part of getting traffic from search engines; this is when the search terms that a user types in are full phrases or sentences, which means that the results will be extremely targeted. Targeting long tail keywords will allow you to reach a very specific audience and the traffic you generate from the search engines will be extremely valuable.

Using Keywords

Depending on what stage the development of your website is in, you need to try and develop your site around your chosen keywords. For example, when writing the content you should be using your main keywords as often as possible (without “keyword stuffing”, which is punished by search engines). Keyword density is just one of many factors the algorithms take into account when they look at your site. They will also be looking at your use of Title and Header tags which will tell the search engines about the main theme of the content on your page, so it’s very important to put your main keywords in the title of your page, and use other keywords in your headings. There are many other “on-page” factors which you should be considering, such as URL structure and Meta tags. On Page optimization is very important but is really very easy to do, and so you should be able to build your website using good SEO techniques very quickly.

On and Off Page Optimization

Off Page Optimization is another form of SEO which is probably more important to search engines than On Page Optimization. It is all about the way other sites link to yours and the different ways your content is distributed. Having lots of inbound links is vitally important to the search engine ranking of your site, and this is where your content and marketing techniques are put under the spotlight.

If you have naturally good content and a well marketed site, other sites will link to you in abundance and your site will soon find itself at the top of the search engine rankings. On the other hand, if your content is poor and few people are interested by it, getting inbound links to your website will be incredibly difficult.

Title

The title tag is one of the most important tags to worry about. The title must contain keywords in it and at the same time must be interesting. When a visitor is browsing the search engine results, even if it is placed near the top of the page a visitor may not click it if its not interesting. Together with a well formed title that includes keywords is the most effective way to craft your title.

Headings

Use keywords in h1 tags and don’t forget to make them descriptive to capture the visitors attention. Try to structure your articles heirarchy by the top down approach. Do NOT overuse the h1 tags.

Keywords

When writing your article it’s always important to use keywords through out the article. Keywords placed at the top of the article should be in bold face using the strong tag. Keywords should also exist at the bottom or towards the end of the article also, If possible place them in bold too. Pay attention to keyword density too. You can’t have too many keywords and you can’t have to little. The best way to measure the right keywords density is to use a keyword density toll. Do a basic search on a subject that interests you and choose the first website that is displayed and run a keyword density tool on it. You will need the url of the website.

Do not forget to make your content interesting and useful because visitors and other web masters may link to it which will increase your page rank.

Incoming Links

Making your website popular on the internet is important also. It not only increases your page rank it brings free targeted traffic to your website. Websites that no incoming links usually rank very low on search engine query results. The problem with building links is how do you build your links without having any. There are many services out there that will submit your link to several internet directories for free. The top directories are Yahoo and dmoz. Yahoo is a yearly paid subscription service. It is not guaranteed that your site will even be listed in their directory either. But, web masters that have managed to get their site listed says it’s worth it. dmoz is free but it’s very difficult to get listed and takes a long time.

If you can find a website that is related to yours and get your link placed on their site is the best way to go. This will drastically increase your traffic and Google page rank. The best way of getting your link placed on other websites is to email them directly and ask them. 90% of the time they will say no but all you need is just a few quality links to get you started. Also, make sure the page your link is on only has a few out going links within it. Otherwise, Google degrades the quality of the link. If at all possible attempt to get your link on a web page that has a high page rank, it will benefit your page rank.

You can also ask other web masters for reciprocal links. Reciprocal links is the idea of both web masters placing each others links on their website. Googlw will degrade these kind of links but it will at least get your website noticed.

Anchor Text

Anchor Text are the letters in a link. meshplex1234 – this is a link and the letters “meshplex1234″ are the anchor text. When people link to your website it is important what anchor text they use on the link. For example, if your website is about Rolex watches, then it is a good idea to use those types of keywords in your anchor text. If you manage to get many incoming links then you can use many combinations of anchor text such as, “Timex Watches”, “Rolex Watches”, “Expensive Watches”, “Gold Watches”, etc. You get the drift.

Page Rank

Your Google page rank is determined by the quality and quantity of links to your webpage. The page rank is attached to a particular webpage NOT a website. It is a rating from 0 to 10 with 10 being the best. It does not rank a website it only ranks individual web pages. If you manage to get your link placed on a webpage it is important to make sure the page is relevant to your website this will drastically increase your page rank. Don’t ask for incoming links that is not related to your site because it will not increase your page rank and it will not bring targeted traffic which is a waste of time. The fewer outgoing links will increase the quality of your link. Usually, links from edu and gov domains are very choices to start. They can get your PR 1-3 easily.

  • Spam – Do not put spam on your website
  • Content – fix all spelling and grammatical errors
  • Errors – Fix all html errors
  • Font – Don’t use the same color font as your background
  • Words – Don’t use profanity
  • Meta Tags – Use meta tags wisely
  • whois – Make sure your whois information is NOT private

Age of Web Site

Older more established websites rank higher on search engine results. This is why it is important to register your name and publish your website ASAP. Websites are born by the thousands everyday and as fast as they are born they die. After your site survives 24 months you will start to notice more traffic coming from search engines.

SEO Tools

Conclusion

One of the most important SEO lessons is to make sure your content is enjoyable and will generate interest from other websites, without this your website may well fall into obscurity. Being an expert in your particular field is vital to creating content which will be enjoyed not only by visitors, but also by search engines. If you can use technical language and jargon during your articles, and offer extremely good advice, your content will be well ranked for very specific keywords.

How to add PHP Code into a WordPress post / page

Posted by on Mar 29, 2009 in Web Design & Development | 0 comments

As many of you know, in WordPress you can write a post or page only in HTML format. In some cases you may need to put some dynamic code in use. For example today I made a page for Top Posts and I had to put some PHP code into it. So I searched for WP plugins that will let me do that. I found two PHPexec and RunPHP that are made for that purpose. It looks that PHPexec is no more supported by its creator but there is a version for WordPress 2.x and it got to work for me. I had no success with RunPHP probably because of my hosting settings or my template. I am not sure. You may try both of them and see what works for you.

When you install the plugins you have to activate them and use the Code Editor when posting. It does not work with the standard Visual Editor. The PHPexec is used with <phpcode><?php “your code here” ?> </phpcode> tags. RunPHP does not require some additional tags.

In order both of the plugins to work you have to deactivate “WordPress should correct invalidly nested XHTML automatically” option which you can find in Options->Writing in your WordPress admin panel.
